Missing Makeup Experiment 1: No Brows

I know that I primarily post about applying makeup, but I decided to try something a little different this time.  What if I left something out?  I thought I'd start conducting a series of experiments where I leave out an essential point of makeup.  For me, a full face of makeup includes brows, eyes, cheeks, and lips.  Sure, this seems like a silly experiment, but there's a good reason behind it.  As you know, I'm a really busy chick and, often, I don't have the time to do a very thorough makeup job.  So, by doing this, I can find out which points of makeup are essential, and which ones I can skip when I'm really short on time.  So let's start from the top down.  Today, I thought I'd skip the brows.  This is how the look turned out:

Ok, so I don't look entirely hideous, but I must admit, unfilled brows look pretty weird on me.  Naturally, I have very thin and sparse brows so it's difficult to go without darkening them.  I know that now more than ever, lol.  Even my husband chuckled a little when I asked him how I looked.  I decided against going out like this, so I ended up filling them in.  What a difference!

Much better!  When I was in high school, a girlfriend's mother (who was a makeup artist) had told us that brows are one of the most important aspects of the face because they frame the eyes, therefore being essential towards expressiveness.  I agreed with her then and I agree with her now.  Bottom line?  For me, no brows = no bueno!  Haha! :D

Hope you all had fun with this post!  Nighty-night!

Hugs,
Cat

  1. haha, very interesting. I do agree with your friend's mother though, but like you said, you need to experiment with these things to know what's essential.

    what's next?

    1. Glad you enjoyed it. :) Next up, everything but eye makeup!

  2. I completely agree with you about brows. My brows and thin and sparse as well. If I had to choose between filled in brows or foundation, filling in my brows wins. Can't wait to see what's next!

    1. Yes! I'd choose brows over foundation any day...due to lack of brow volume! lol

  3. I have only once done my eyebrows (last Saturday at a make-up workshop) and you could notice some difference. However, I like my brows, they're not really thin. Plus, I'm too lazy to do anything about them, so I just don't ;)

  4. Hey Cat, this is an interesting experiment! I can go out with no makeup, but I HAVE to fill my brows in because otherwise I look like a darn frog lol

Can't wait to see the rest of this series :) I'd skip lips and cheeks happily on most days myself.

    1. I'm happy you're enjoying the experiment! I guess I'll see what points of makeup I can and can't do without as we go along, but for sure, brows are a must-have for me! :D

  5. What an original post! I love it! You're so fun! Personally, I have thick eyebrows, so I never fill them. o.o The only thing I do is try to pluck them so they don't look too bushy.

Geez, this week is looong! School is making my life miserable... Hope things are going better on your side!

    1. I would kill for thick eyebrows! My mother has really full, beautifully shaped brows that require very little maintenance. Unfortunately, I inherited nearly invisible brows from my dad (Thanks Dad!) which I have to fill in daily!

School is more time intensive for me this quarter. Add work, jewelry-making, and kickboxing classes (which I'll post about soon) and I've barely time to blog, as you've probably noticed. :( I haven't made a YouTube video in ages, even though I've got a ton of material just waiting to be edited. I feel real bad. My goal for this busy period is to try and post every other day and make one video a week. From my vantage point, it seems like a pretty tall order since midterms are coming up next week! Yikes!

    2. Lol, my dad has practically no eyebrows either! xD

I'm not even working during school, I have no time whatsoever! I used to go to the gym everyday, but I didn't sign up this semester... My body and mood aren't great... I NEED exercises in my life! Good luck for you midterms next week! I also have a exam already, on Monday! :( Goodbye weekend...

    3. Yep, it's really hard to find the time to get proper exercise in, but if you're running around a large campus, that counts a little, right? :)

      Good luck on yours too!

  6. Wow, such a difference! I don't mean it in a bad way, but it's really as if your brows had almost vanished without filling them in. I don't notice such a big difference personally because I have sort of strong thick brows, which are quite visible no matter what. I do see a lot of difference when I don't groom them - by that I mean removing the extra hair underneath them with tweezers. =)
    Lovely to see you again!

    1. Hi Mauni! Wanna trade brows? Lol. But yes, to reinforce what you said, I feel pretty naked without filling in my brows since they're so sparse. Can't leave the house without them! :D

  8. That makes a big difference! I don't bother doing much with my brows. As you can see from the FOTD on my blog, they're a bit crazy. On the upside though, they don't need any filling in (maybe some tweezing) :)

    1. You're really fortunate to have nice full brows! Not only are mine sparse, but they're very asymmetrical and weirdly shaped. They require a lot of work to look somewhat normal. What I wouldn't give to be able to skip all the brow drama! lol

    2. Remember eyebrows are sisters, not twins ;)

    3. What a great saying! I used to be absolutely obsessed with making my brows as perfectly symmetrical as possible. I've definitely come to terms that they'll never be totally alike and I'm okay with that. :D

  9. I don't think it looks that weird, you look nice with natural brows too, but the rest of your eye make-up just seems much harsher without brows.. the main difference for me is that you look more confident in the second pictures, and that you are making funny faces in the first ones, you can tell that you didn't feel totally confident with it.

    1. Aw, thanks Pearl. :) You're right about the makeup looking harsh without the brows to balance them out. I actually DO go "brow-less", but only when I'm not wearing any other makeup at all. Looks much better that way!
